PROJECT FILMS
The steps and processes to make a short film
The idea of a short film is......... it is short............ don't lose sight of this.
Ideas…These come from everywhere. Something you saw on a bus, your childhood, an unfulfilled ambition. This is totally open ended and it’s this spark that will fire your whole project.
Script… This is where you decide how many characters you will need and what dialogue and interaction they will have. What sort of environment it’s in even whether day or night. Fully expect to re-write this quite a few times, Ask for people’s opinions and heed what they say.
Story board… A shot by shot break down. It’s a series of small simple drawings showing camera movements and other camera attributes such as angle and how close the image is framed. All the script information associated with this shot is also noted here.
Plan… Who do we need to get this thing done, who can we find to act, can we get all the gear …cameras/lights/mic`s. Is it even do-able?
Locations… Take it out into the world. Look past your home. You will know by now what is required now go and find it.
Shooting… They say you can fix anything in editing…don’t risk it. Be sure to do it right first time. If you use multiple cameras and camera angles, expect to do each take a few times. Review your footage there and then because it’s unlikely you will be able to repeat the shot at a later time.
Editing… This is going to take a long time to get right. You can make or break the project at this point. Save your work often and each time with a different name e.g. “edit-23” so you can go back to a previous version if you lose direction. Again ask for the opinion of others.
Enjoy yourself… show it to all your friends and family and bask in the glory.
